In 1980, the National Women’s History Alliance successfully lobbied Congress to pass a joint resolution authorizing the president to declare a week recognizing women’s history. President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the week of March 8, 1980, Women’s History Week.
In 1987, Congress expanded the recognition by passing Public Law 100-9, designating March as Women’s History Month. Starting with President Ronald Reagan, each president since has proclaimed the month recognizing women’s contributions.
