The centerpiece of all the monuments and memorials on the National Mall, the Washington Monument towers above the local landscape, dedicated to the first president of the United States. It is viewable from almost anywhere along the Mall, but particularly viewable from both the White House and the U.S. Capitol Building. After an earthquake damaged the monument, it is now reopened for tours inside.
I had heard about the raging, magnificent Cascade Falls for years. I had seen photos captured during the summer and winter months. Dozens of people had recommended I visit this place. But I was not prepared for the adventure ahead or the majesty of what I was about to find. I was about to embark on a three-hour tour of the Appalachian Mountains that I would never forget!
I had only been on the Appalachian Trail for about thirty minutes and I’d already come across a field of wild ponies, viewed a breathtaking panorama from the top of a rocky outcropping, and I could see the tallest mountain in Virginia nearby. This is exactly why Grayson Highlands State Park is one of the best places to access the Appalachian Trail. And exactly why I do it at least once every year.
How many Supermoons were we supposed to have in 2014? Seems like every month throughout the summer we had another Supermoon event, but one of those months I found myself along the North Carolina coast in Wrightsville Beach. So I crafted a plan, a very careful plan, a plan that was heavily criticized by other local photographers. I wonder what they think of my result?
I have a passion for finding and photographing old historic covered bridges, which must be the reason why I walked about 1.5 miles on a day with severe summer thunderstorms passing through the area. I got as far as the bridge, stood at the entrance, just in time to hear a crack of thunder loud enough to rattle my spine. I came back a few days later.

This little waterfall along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina is a nice detour, a short hike, and the stone observation deck is directly beside the roaring waterfall.
Mt. Jefferson is a 1,600′ towering mountain looming over the beautiful country town of West Jefferson, North Carolina. Just a few miles down Highway 16 is the Blue Ridge Parkway, and just a few miles down the parkway is this overlook. It provides a stunning look at the towering mountain, which also plays host to the Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area (sometimes referred to as Mt. Jefferson State Park).
