3 Day Hikes on the Appalachian Trail in Northeast Tennessee

There are so many amazing places to hike on the Appalachian Trail, but what if you just don’t have the time? While the AT is known for its remoteness in nature it is also easily accessible at the thousands of road crossings. These three locations in Northeast Tennessee are great places to strike out for a simple day hike to see waterfalls, panorama mountain views, and stunning sunsets.

The Stunning Beauty Spot on the Appalachian Trail

Beauty Spot is probably one of the most appropriately named locations on the Appalachian Trail. Thru-hikers want to spend a zero day here, locals drive up the mountain every weekend, and first-time visitors become repeat customers after seeing a sunset here. The best part is that you can practically drive to this magical spot, but still be far enough from your car to enjoy the wilderness for the night.

Round Bald on the Appalachian Trail

Round Bald is one of the most easily accessible locations for stunning views on the entire Appalachian Trail. Just a twenty minute walk whisks visitors away from the hustle and bustle of the world to the Roan Highlands and uninterrupted views in all directions. Pack a picnic, spend the night, play catch, it really doesn’t matter what you do just so long as you enjoy it.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail at Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia

I had only been on the Appalachian Trail for about thirty minutes and I’d already come across a field of wild ponies, viewed a breathtaking panorama from the top of a rocky outcropping, and I could see the tallest mountain in Virginia nearby. This is exactly why Grayson Highlands State Park is one of the best places to access the Appalachian Trail. And exactly why I do it at least once every year.

The Four Star Thomas Knob Shelter on the Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail features over 250 shelters from Georgia to Maine, spread about 15 miles apart. These shelters are primarily meant for thru-hikers who do not carry a tent or sleeping bag to keep the weight of their pack down, but anyone can use these. If I were to write a review of the shelters the same as I would write one for a hotel or B&B, and apply a star rating system, I would have to give the Thomas Knob Shelter a four-star rating. But if you want to know why I would give such a high rating,

5 Favorite Trails at Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia

Everybody knows you can find the wild ponies on the Appalachian Trail just outside Grayson Highlands State Park. Or at least, I think everybody knows that. But I find most people do not know the state park nestled in one of the most beautiful areas of Southwest Virginia boasts 17 trails for hiking, cross country skiing, horseback riding, or mountain biking.

The Annual Trail Days Festival in Damascus, VA

Trail Days is a celebration equally for the thousands of people who hike the Appalachian Trail as well as the town of Damascus itself. Strategically located directly on the AT, Damascus is one of several hearts along the trail. Think of this town as being a train station along a very long railway, a station where everyone stops to enjoy a warm shower, juicy hamburger, and actual bed. This is why, once a year, the town puts on a huge celebration for all those people who once stopped in this sleepy little country town.
