Newfound Gap Scenic Overlook at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Although not the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park I certainly felt like I was standing on the roof of the world at the Newfound Gap Scenic Overlook. It’s kinda the “center” of the park along Highway 441 between Cherokee, North Carolina and Gatlinburg, Tennessee, making it easily accessible from must about anywhere. With a large parking area, plenty of seating, and some restrooms this is one place where I could spend all day.

Thru-hikers want to spend a zero day here, locals drive up the mountain every weekend, and first-time visitors become repeat customers after seeing a sunset here. The best part is that you can practically drive to this magical spot, but still be far enough from your car to enjoy the wilderness for the night.

I had only been on the Appalachian Trail for about thirty minutes and I’d already come across a field of wild ponies, viewed a breathtaking panorama from the top of a rocky outcropping, and I could see the tallest mountain in Virginia nearby.
